Frequently asked questions
// bidder FAQsWhat is a buyer's premium?
It's a flat percentage of your gross purchase, charged by the auction house to help cover the cost of doing business. Paying a buyer's premium lets us keep our consignment rates competitive for sellers — which keeps good merchandise coming through our doors for you to bid on. Hill's buyer's premium is 15% of your total purchases.
Can I leave an absentee bid on an item?
As a courtesy to our regular customers, we do allow absentee bids — but we don't accept bids based on internet photos. Every item must be inspected in person before an absentee bid can be placed, and we still can't guarantee authenticity or condition. All absentee bids are executed competitively. See our Absentee Bid Policy for full details.
I'm not a Pennsylvania resident — do I still owe sales tax?
Yes — all bidders owe PA sales tax regardless of home state, unless you hold a state sales tax exemption ID. If you do, we'll need a copy of that exemption number on file before we can waive tax on your purchases.
